Rolling Stone magazine; Issue 153; January 31, 1973

Here is another issue of Rolling Stone magazine. There isn't much I think would be of interest to Punk Rockers except a Iggy & The Stooges gig review but I scanned a few things I thought might interest some people.

In this issue:
-Death of Bobby Darin article
-Death of Tex Ritter article
-Brownsville Station article
-Alice Cooper article
-Iggy & The Stooges NYC 12-31-73 gig review

Damneddeadsham band - Claredon Hotel, London 10-06-81

What do Dead Boys, Damned and Sham 69 have in common besides being Punk bands? A member from each of those bands got together in 1981 and formed Lords Of The New Church. However, while they were in there embryonic phase they played this gig as the Damneddeadsham band playing songs from each of their former bands plus a few cover. It's recorded from the audience and is a rough recording but I don't think you'll hear Brian James play Sonic Reducer or Stiv Bators sing Borstal Breakout anywhere else.

setlist:
01. intro
02. Sonic Reducer [Dead Boys]
03. Borstal Breakout [Sham 69]
04. Neat Neat Neat [Damned]
05. Get It On [T-Rex]
06. Sick of Being Sick [Damned]
07. I Had Too Much To Dream [Electric Prunes]
08. Pills [Bo Diddley]
09. Ain't Nothing To Do [Dead Boys]
10. New Rose [Damned]
11. If The Kids Are United [Sham 69]

Crabs - Vortex, Peel, singles 1978-1979

In 1979-1980 I bought the album Farewell To The Roxy and listened to it endlessly. I thought every song on it was great but my favorite one was the Crabs Lullabies Lie. In those years it was nearly impossible to find out any info on those smaller bands that seemed to only release one song on some comp LP or maybe a single before disappearing into obscurity. As far as I knew the Crabs never released anything else. At about the same time period I bought the Fulham Furies single. I thought it wan an okay Punk single but nothing outstanding. I never knew until the 1990s that this band was in fact the Crabs. Sometime in the last 10 years the Vortex show and Peel Session began to make the rounds of the trade circles and it was quite a joy to get a hold of these  in order to finally be able to hear more music by The Crabs. Also, some websites finally started to write about and supply loads of information of the Crabs history. In 1978 they signed to Lightning Records and were supposed to release an ep with the songs Victim, Blue Unction and Save My Skin. No record has ever surfaced so it is believed that it was never released. The band split up in July 1978 and the lead guitarist Ronnie "Rocker" Newson and drummer Ricci Titcombe joined Zorro. Zorro was considered a part of the emerging New Wave Of British Heavy Metal scene and released one ep in 1979. Two of the songs on the ep sound more in league with The Crabs than any Heavy Metal sound. On the Vortex gig The Crabs played with Sham 69, Jerks and Mirrors. The Jerks recording from this show is officially released on their We Hate You CD and there is a tape of the Sham 69 set floating around.

Adam & The Ants - demos, part 1; 1977

Adam & The Ants formed in 1977 but only release their first single in 1978. In 1977 they recorded some excellent demos which mostly remain unreleased to this day. A few of these songs ended up being re-recorded for b-sides in the early 1980s. Quality is great on both these demos.

Sham 69 - Live shows 1979 + 1980

In 1979, after much visa problems, Sham 69 finally played two shows in the USA, one in New York and the other in Los Angeles.  Here is the New York show as recorded from the audience by the legendary Donnie The Punk. It's rough on quality and the right channel drops out half way through but it sounds like it was a great gig and well anticipated. The Stockholm show is from a Swedish Radio broadcast that was recorded not too long before the split up and is great quality.

Killjoys - Raw session, Rehearsal, Peel Sessions 1977-1978

The Killjoys were from Birmingham England and in 1977 released a classic Punk single on Raw Records. Only one other song was officially released before they split up in mid-1978. They existed for a little over a year. In that time they also managed to record two John Peel Sessions. The Raw Records session here is the one the single came from but I think these are different mixes and there is talking between songs by the engineer and the band. The rehearsal tape gives us a few extra songs that haven't been heard much before.

Stranglers - Demos + Live 1974-1978

By request here are some Stranglers demos, and I've topped the post off with an early 1977 live show. Three songs - Wasted, Strange Little Girl, My Young Dreams (different recording than what's here) from the 1974 demo have been officially released on the The Early Years 74-75-76 Rare Live & Unreleased CD so I didn't include them here. Hans Wärmling also plays guitar on these songs. The quality of all the demos is very good. The live show was recorded from the audience and is a bit raw but listenable.

Avengers - Live shows pt.4 - 1979

At the end of 1978 original Avengers guitarist left and was replaced by Brad Kent from Vancouver Canada who had been a past member of D.O.A. and a couple other bands.  On all these shows they are playing new songs co-written with Brad Kent. On the Geary Temple show the play the rare song Lonely Girl plus a Velvet Underground cover. The Geary and Mab shows are both audience recordings so the quality is a little rough but still listenable. The Old Waldorf show is a radio broadcast and tracks 3 to 11 have been officially released on the The American In Me CD so you should buy it for the superior sound quality. The sound quality here is good.

Avengers - Live shows pt.3 - 1978 (continued)

Here's three more Avengers shows from 1978. I only have these two songs from this Mab show and have never been able to track down the complete show. The Whiskey show is a little special because it has the rare songs Night Ride and Flames Of Evil plus an Eddie Cochran cover and also an extended jam on I Want In. The song Flames of Evil is the same music as the song on the Died For Your Sins CD titled Something's Wrong but with different lyrics. The Aito's show is also special because of some rare songs. On October 23, 1978 The Avengers were in the studio recording 4 songs with former Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones. Out of that collaboration The Avengers added two Steve Jones songs to their set - Second To None (recorded by The Professionals as 1,2,3) and Lonely Girl (recorded by Steve Jones and Paul Cook as Lonely Boy for The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle soundtrack). And, there is also the mystery track Promised Land. All three shows were recorded from the audience but the sound is good on all of them.

Avengers - Live shows pt.2 - 1978

Four live Avengers shows here from the first half of 1978. All songs here have seen the light of day on various records and CDs apart from the cover of The Who's Substitute and a mystery song called Run. At the Winterland show they opened for The Sex Pistols and is a radio broadcast. The other three shows are audience recordings and are all good quality. The date or the venue on the fourth show is incorrect as it doesn't match with the Avengers gigography: http://www.penelope.net/avshows.html

Bags - Live Shows 1978-1979

The Bags from Los Angeles were around from 1977 to 1981 and in that time only released a single in 1978 on Dangerhouse Records and had one song on a Dangerhouse compilation LP besides making an appearance in the film The Decline Of Western Civilization in 1980. Until the All Bagged Up album was released in 2007 all the bags we had to listen to, besides the single, was just a couple of live tapes that made the rounds. The Masque show is the only complete set ever in circulation and it was recorded from the audience so the quality is rough but listenable especially for the unreleased songs. The Hong Kong Cafe show is much better in quality and a good listen but still recorded from the audience. The Troubadour show is off of a video and is rough also but still fun to listen to.

Eddie & The Hotrods - Rehearsal 1977 + Antonio's, Pittsburgh 11-21-77

Here's more Eddie & The Hotrods. The rehearsal features the original line up and all these songs ended up on their first album. The quality is good but there is a lot of tape hiss. The Pittsburgh show was recorded on their first U.S. Tour and has Graeme Douglas in the line up. It was recorded from the audience and is a bit rough but sounds like it was a great show.

Curvettes - Demo (2003)

Here's a relatively recent band who were from New York City. Musically they fit in with Devil Dogs and New Bomb Turks. I have no info on them and only know of them because a friend who auditioned for them after the drummer on this demo left was given this demo to listen to. Doesn't seem they ever settled on a new drummer and ultimately disappeared from the face of the earth leaving only this demo behind. It's a great one though.

Misanthropic Charity - De Space, Rotterdam Holland 5-20-89

Misanthropic Charity were from Copenhagen Denmark and existed from 1985 until 1989. The band featured Bibbi on vocals and Michael on drums who both had previously been members of Electric Deads. Anders, formerly of Enola Gay, was on guitar and Lars played the bass. In 1986 they recorded and released their one and only LP. After the LP was released Michael left the band and was replaced by Ant (aka Juris) who was the mastermind behind and singer of President Fetch. In 1988 they recorded two new songs which were released on a compilation LP in France (I forget the name of it). In May 1989 they did a tour of Holland with another Danish band, Happy Harriet & The Fallen Men. This live show was recorded during that tour. Most of the songs here were new at the time and because they broke up after this tour they were never recorded in the studio. This is a soundboard recording so the quality is very good.

D.O.A. - Live in 1980

Here's D.O.A. live in 1980 from two different shows. The Toronto show is a soundboard recording and is good quality. The White Noise Tour ep is from a bootleg 7" but I don't know where it was recorded. It sounds like it could be a soundboard recording as well. The interesting thing about both these shows is the unreleased song What'cha Doin' (a.k.a. Chuck's New One) and the rare live version of the rare song Suiciding.

Big Chief - John Peel Session 10-20-91

Big Chief were from Ann Arbor Michigan and were around from 1989 to 1996. Their singer had previously been famous as a member of The Necros from Maumee Ohio. The band got lumped in with the Grunge thing but were so much more interesting than that. They released three excellent CDs and also recorded this Peel Session complete with a Black Flag cover song.

UXA - Part 1 [Illusions of Grandeur LP 1980 + single]

UXA were from San Francisco and started in 1977. In 1979 they had two songs on the Tooth And Nail compilation LP and in 1980 their only LP was released on the Poshboy label. Initially the LP was released in a special limited pressing with 10 songs. When that sold well the LP was remixed and had two songs added. In 1981 they moved to New York City for a while before moving to Los angeles and splitting up. In 1982 De De Detroit formed the De De Detroit Band with some former members of UXA while still performing the odd UXA show. By 1986 De De Detroit was fronting a Metal band under her name. In 1990 the Poshboy label released a UXA single consisting of two old songs from the original band period. During the 1990s De De Detroit got together a new line up of UXA, played around and released some recordings. In 2003 the Miner's Benefit compilation CD that has two UXA tracks recorded live in March 1978 was released.

Philly Hardcore 1981-1986 Part 2

Kremlin Korps were around for about 1 years - 1983-1984 - and released one 7" ep in that time. When they split 3 members formed Homo Picnic. The More Fiends were a very unique sounding band that started in 1985. They released two albums, are the only Philly band to record a John Peel Session and one of the few Philly bands to tour Europe. This early live show is with the original line up  - guitar/slide guitar/drums/sax - and they have a more No Wave sound which is much different than the more Punky sound they are known for. This line up never released anything but apparently they did record some demos. Ruin need no intro. They were the best band to ever come out of Philly. On this show they played for almost 90 straight minutes. Seeds Of Terror existed from 1982 to 1984 and only had two songs on the Get Off My Back Philly Hardcore comp. though they did record a full albums worth of stuff. All I have is this one song which is about the Philly DJ Lee Paris.

Philly Hardcore 1981-1986 Part 1

In the annals of Hardcore Punk history Philadelphia usually gets the short end of the stick but this was my scene and I can tell you it was one of the best in the country at that time. Being located between New York City and Washington DC made it easy for most touring bands to stop there and most of them did. It was a fun and friendly scene. Problem is most of the Philly bands never toured or released anything more than a 7" though most of them did record an album. All these bands were fun to see live. Autistic Behavior recorded 10 songs in a studio. Six were supposed to be released on an ep, 2 were supposed to be on the never released comp LP being put together by Bad Brains but only two songs ended up being released on the Philly Hardcore comp. Get Off My Back. Crib Death were one of the Philly bands (along with F.O.D.) that opened the legendary Minot Threat show at Buff Hall in Camden NJ. Because there were other bands named Crib Death they changed their name to Blunder Boys - name taken from a Three Stooges film. They split when their singer started a family and their drummer became the bass player for F.O.D. Decontrol started in 1980 but didn't release their first record until 1985 possibly due to a continuously revolving line up. In those 5 years they developed and created their own style which some liked and others hated. I loves it! Homo Picnic formed out of the ashes of Kremlin Korps and Sudden Impact. In the middle of 1985 their singer left and they kept the line up to a three piece and changed to a more Metal influenced sound. In 1986 they released an LP that had a few songs from the original line up but mostly new songs. Informed Sources were one of the earlier bands that started in 1981. In mid 1982 they changed singers. They recorded some demos with the original singer and a full album with the second singer but only two songs were ever released on the Get Off My Back comp. LP.

Diodes - Horseshoe Tavern, Toronto Canada 6-80

Canada had some great Punk bands back in the day and The Diodes were one of them. They were one of the first Punk bands in Toronto and helped get that scene going by opening the Crash 'n' Burn club. Between 1977 and 1982 they released 4 albums. Here's a nice radio broadcast from the summer of 1980 that has great sound quality and all the songs you'd want to hear in a Diodes live set. Can anyone put a title track 7? From cassette tape.

Social Unrest - Demo + Live shows 1980-1983

Social Unrest came from Hayward California and formed in 1979. They had the great fortune of having their first two records produced by Dead Kennedy's guitarist East Bat Ray. Those two records were the only ones to feature original singer Kreetin Kaos who left c.1984. This demo and these live shows feature his vocal talents. The Mabuhay and unknown show are soundboard recordings so sound is excellent, the demo is also excellent quality. The On Broadway show was recorded from the audience and is rough but has three unreleased songs on it. Lots of rare songs on all these recordings. The live unknown show was just two songs someone stuck on the end of a tape. Does anyone know where it is from? I'd like to get a copy of the whole show.

These Blades were from Los Angeles California and were formed by three members of The Outsiders when that band split. The Blades were around for a couple years but only released three songs on the Someone Got Their Head kicked In compilation LP on BYO Records in 1982. They did get plenty of press in Flipside Magazine, though.

Outsiders - Demo (1979)

These Outsiders were from Huntington Beach California and existed from 1977 to 1980. In 1979 they recorded this demo but never released any records. After the Outsiders split the guitarist formed China White and two other members formed The Blades. China White fans will know track one here as the same song that is on that bands Dangerzone 12" ep. Also, China White played the song A New Order in live shows but don't seem to have recorded it.

Syphilitics - You Got Nothing 1996-1998

Let's step into the 1990s this time with The Syphilitics. They were from Cincinnati Ohio and existed from 1995 to 1998. In that time they recorded three demos and only two of their songs ever got officially released, both on compilation 7" eps. The first comp. was titled Blasts From The Pasts vol. 1 (info here: http://www.grunnenrocks.nl/label/c/centslessproductions.htm) and had a song from their second demo on it. The other was titled Contents Under Pressure and had a song from their last demo on it. They rarely ever played outside the Cincinnati area. In 1998 the rhythm section left and they changed their name to Black Trans Am and their sound to a more Turbonegro influence sound. Syphilitics were my favorite Punk band in the 1990s. Plenty of snot and attitude for your listening pleasure. From cassette tape.

X Ray Spex - Brixton Academy, London 9-14-91

The X Ray Spex did a reunion show in 1991 and some thoughtful person taped it for those of us who couldn't be there. I don't know which original band members were involved but not all of them were, I believe. The most interesting thing about this show is the four new songs. Those songs fit better with the Conscious Consumer album of 1995 than they do with the first album material of 1978 but after listening to that first album a million times I prefer to hear these new songs especially Be Conscious and Trick Of The Witch. Sadly, as far as I know, they have never been released officially. This is an audience recording so the quality is a bit rough.

In 2003 a CD was compiled of their studio tracks and live tracks. All the live tracks are taken from these two show. The quality is lo-fi but still nice to listen to.

Eastern Dark - The Venetian Room, Melbourne 8-17-85

The Eastern Dark were from Australia and existed for about two years between 1984 and 1986. In that time they released one 7". The band ended when one member was killed in a car crash on the way to a gig. Weeks before the crash they recorded a 12" ep which was released a few months later. In 1990 a double LP was released that contained demos and live recordings titled Girls On The Beach (With Cars). A few songs from this live recording are on that album. It is an audience recording and the quality is pretty good. From cassette tape.

The Suicide Commandos were from Minneapolis Minnesota were one of the earliest Punk bands in the USA releasing their first record in August 1976. Over their two year existence they release two single and one album plus has three final songs on a compilation before having a live album of their final show released. From Feb 18 to Apr 1 1978 they were the opening band on the Coed Jail Tour with Pere Ubu. One show at CBGBs from that tour was recorded by some very nice person. They played two sets that night but I do not have the complete second set. This first set includes songs from their records, a few new songs and a cover of a song by the band Love. It's an audience recording but is good quality.

Normals - demos 1978

The Normals were one of the first Punk bands in New Orleans and they existed from 1977 to 1979. In 1978 they released their one and only single which a classic of the time. Members of the band can be see in the film DOA - A Rite Of Passage at one of the Sex Pistols gigs. In mid 1979 they moved to New York City but not much happened for them and they soon broke up. In the 1990s a CD titled Your Punk Heritage was released that  featured the single, demos and live tracks. A must have CD. Also, in 2007 another CD was released titled 1978 Recordings and is impossible to find. It's on a Japanese label and is out of print. Here, also, is the Vacation Is For You demo which has different versions of songs that appear on both CDs.

Chrissie Hynde - Demos 1978 (w/ex Pistols)

Here's some demos Chrissie Hynde recorded in 1978. The first song is a cover of a 60s song by the Ronettes and has Steve Jones and Paul Cook formerly of the Sex Pistols helping out. The other two songs I know nothing about but are suspected Pretenders demos.

Klan - Demo 1979

The Klan were from Los Angeles and were formed by the singer when his previous band The Simpletones split up. They don't seem to have been around for very long but did release one single on Posh Boy Records in 1980. The single has been re-released on the Simpletones I Have a Date CD in 2002. After this band split some members formed The Cheifs. The quality is a bit rough but still listenable. From cassette tape.

Bernie Tormé & Electric Gypsies - BBC In Concert 11-06-82

How about some New Wave of British Heavy Metal, anyone? All you 1977 Punk lovers should know Bernie Tormé because he had two songs on the Live At The Vortex album that was released in 1978 and also released a great single in that year and an excellent ep in 1979. After which Bernie went off to play Heavy Metal and become famous with Gillian and Ozzy. In 1981 he went back to his own solo career and that's where this live recording comes in. No Easy Way is my fave here and is the one that most sounds like something that was written by him in 1978. There's also a rather interesting version of Search and Destroy as well.

They went right on doing what they were doing and released two albums and a couple singles. Sadly, they came to an end when one of their members died in a motorcycle accident. Both these shows are radio broadcasts and the quality is very good. From cassette tape.

Simple Minds/Johnny & The Self Abusers - Live + Demos

Johnny & The Self Abusers were from Glasgow Scotland and released one now classic single on the Chiswick label at the end of August 1977. By the time that single was released they decided to change their name to Simple Minds. Johnny & The Self Abusers only played a handful of gigs before the name change. In November 1977 they (as Simple Minds) recorded seven tracks from their Self Abusers set that only briefly saw the light of day on a 1998 CD which was withdrawn soon after release. After these recordings some members split off and formed The Cuban Heels. The rest of the Simple Minds carried on with additional members and a change in sound. In this 1979 live show they still play a few songs from their Johnny & The Self Abusers days. Excellent quality all around.

Nervous Eaters - WCOZ, Boston 7-23-78 + Demo

Here's a great live show from a  great band. Nervous Eaters at the time of this recording has 2 single out and were Boston favorites. They released one album in 1980 before disappearing from the scene. Before they got the record deal for the album they recorded a 10 song demo for the record company and I think the demo of Last Chance is one of those songs. The live show is a radio broadcast and is great quality as is the demo. From cassette tape.

Neighborhoods - Paradise, Boston 12-27-79

Before the Neighborhoods were famous they were just another band from Boston slugging it out in the clubs of that city. In 1979 they released a now classic single. Their next release wasn't until 5 years later. They eventually released 4 albums and one 12" ep. This live show was recorded not too long after their first single was released and both songs are played along with some that never got released at all. This is either a soundboard recording or radio broadcast and the quality is great.

Weirdos - rehearsal, lives shows and demo 1977/1978/1989

The Weirdos are my favorite American Punk band so I thought I'd do a big Weirdos post. They existed between 1977 and 1981 and in that time they released only two 7" singles and two 12" ep. It wasn't until 1989 when they regrouped that they finally released an LP. It is unfortunate for the world of music that they did not get to release an LP in 1978 because it would have been a treasured classic. They certainly had the songs for it. The rehearsal and the Whiskey show have been bootleged up and down the world but thought I'd put them up anyways. The Gold Bear show has one song I can't title. Anyone know it? This version of Barbaric Americana is the same one that is on the Weird World vol. 2 CD. These Condor rough mixes are much better here than the final release.

Damned - rehearsals 1979

Here's a nice rehearsal tape of Captain, Rat, Algy and Dave working on a bunch of songs in the time before the Machine Gun Etiquette album. Only two songs here made it onto the album and there is one - Blind Lead The Blind - that didn't make it anywhere. There's also an early version of I Believe The Impossible which here is titled Don't Trouble Trouble. Most of these songs are instrumental. Very good quality.

New York Dolls - Max's, NYC 7-04-76 [with Mick Ronson]

After Thunders and Nolan left the New York Dolls in 1975 Johansen and Sylvain regrouped with new members and kept the band going for another two years. They never released any records but there area few live recordings to help tell the story. Here is a part of one that has Mick Ronson playing guitar with them. Besides Sylvain, Johansen and Ronson, Peter Jordan plays bass, Tony Machine is on drums, and Bobby Blaine plays keyboards. This one is recorded from the audience and is a little raw but is still a fun listen.

setlist: [from cassette tape]
01 Teenage News (Sylvain)
02 Pills (Diddley)
03 Boys' High Mambo (traditional high school chant/taunt)
04 Personality Crisis (Johansen/Thunders)

Nuns - Demo 1977

The Nuns from San Francisco existed from 1976 to 1979 and in that time they only had two singles released. At the end of 1977 they recorded demos for CBS Records but did not get a record deal. They moved for a while to New York City in 1978 and after returning to San Francisco they split up. In 1980 a final single was released before some of the band members got back together to record an LP for the Posh Boy label. These two songs are some of the demos they recorded in 1977 with the original line up. This is from a radio broadcast.

track list: [from cassette tape]
01. World War 3
02. Confused + Talk Talk

Damned - the utopia bootlegs 1979

Leyton Buzzards - BBC In Concert 1979

Leyton Buzzards were from London and existed from 1977 to 1980. In that time they released 5 singles and an LP besides recording four John Peel Sessions. The first single 19 & Mad is a favorite of mine for its raw sound and teen anthem appeal. The rest of their output is soft in comparison but still enjoyable to listen to. This BBC live show features much rawer versions of songs from their album. This is a radio broadcast and the quality is excellent.
